Marriage is a beautiful union when two people are in love. However, many marriages today do not last for long. The reality is that marriages do not terminate suddenly, despite the numerous theories as to why they collapse. There are warning signs that your relationship is having problems. Sometimes, due to various reasons such as ignorance, fear or being too busy, couples tend to ignore these warning signs. But if you want to create a lasting marriage, you need to stay away from these 4 typical risk factors.
Poor Communication
Poor communication is one of the reasons marriages fail today. With today’s hectic lifestyle, most couples do not communicate effectively or properly. It’s common to find couples spending more time on their smartphones/laptops than communicating with their each other. Good communication is vital in a relationship as it allows both of you to share your views on any issues in your relationship and come up with a solution as a couple. When issues are not communicated in the right way, it tends to lead to grudges, piling up of anger, etc.
Lack of Intimacy
Lack of intimacy in your marriage is a common risk factor for marriage breakdown. Usually, intimacy during the early stages of your relationship is not an issue. A decrease in closeness over time, though, is disastrous for your marriage. This typically occurs when you start to become accustomed to the everyday routine, making your relationship monotonous. Your lack of intimacy and sexual desire for each other may lead to cheating and become one of the risk factors why your marriage fails. Be creative and bring in new ideas into the relationship to keep your marriage going. It shouldn’t be one partner’s responsibility but a collective effort to make it work.
Finances
Another reason marriage fail is related to finance. Financial security/stability is very important in a marriage. Money isn’t everything, but it is necessary. . You need money to pay bills and put food on the table for your family. It’s common to see couples fighting over financial issues and over time, this fight will leave a negative impact on their marriages. Have a conversation with your partner on your finances so that you can chart a course forward even when the odds are obvious
I am of the school of thought that both partners must earn a living; depending on one partner alone to bring in the income should be discouraged.
Lack of Understanding
Many couples rush into marriage after knowing each other for only a couple of months. The time taken to know your partner matters a lot as it allows you to truly understand your partner’s strengths and weaknesses. It is through this understanding that you can know if you can live with your partner or not. You can’t be wrong in knowing your partner too well, so do take your time to do so before walking down the aisle.
These risk factors can build barriers in your marriage and overwhelm the positive aspects of your marriage. Do not ignore these risk factors that are capable of leading to a failed marriage if you want a long-lasting marriage.
A broken relationship can be built or repaired; it takes just a willing heart to make things work perfectly. A conscious effort in seeing that the marriage/relationship works and a heart that forgives easily are key.
